The University of Michigan is known for academic excellence, world-renowned research programs, a diverse campus, and strong school spirit. (Go Blue!) Students love that UM-Ann Arbor has the lively, fun feel of a big state school and the academic rigor of a top-notch research university. UM–Ann Arbor is one of the top public research universities in the United States and consistently ranks as one of the best universities in the world.
The UM-Ann Arbor campus has over 580 labs, dorms, libraries, museums and other buildings sprinkled over more than 3,000 acres near the beautiful Huron River in Ann Arbor. The University of Michigan is one of the founding members of the Big Ten conference, and it has long been renowned for its strong athletic programs. The university is passionate about their sports teams, which have won more than 50 national championships.
U-M is a public university that was founded in 1817 by an act of the Michigan Territorial Legislature. In 1837, Michigan achieved statehood and U-M became a public university. The university moved to its new home in Michigan's state capital, Ann Arbor, later that same year. The move was opposed by some, who believed that the university should stay in Detroit. Ultimately, the move seems like it was a good one. Ann Arbor is now a thriving college town and beautiful setting for Michigan's most prestigious university.
Pros
Class Sizes: U-M is a big school, and introductory lecture-style classes may be very large, but other classes can actually be quite small. "Over 50% of their classes have 20 kids or less. 15/1 Professor to student ratio also."
Supportive Atmosphere: "[UM-Ann Arbor is] competitive to get in but not really when [you're] there. It’s more collaboration at that point. The students have nothing to prove. They are all smart...and the opportunities are endless."
Strong Alumni Network: "The [U-M] alumni network is big, and it remains deeply committed to its alma mater. With a Michigan degree, getting a job is relatively easy. In fact, there is a good demand for Michigan graduates in Finance, Consulting, and Technology sectors. All major employers recruit from Michigan, and the campus recruitment is a strong indicator of the quality of its student body."
Cons
Cold Weather: The long, cold Michigan winters won't surprise in-state students, but they can be a challenge for students who are not accustomed to such cold weather.
Cost for Out-of-State Students: UMich is one of the most expensive public universities. "For OOS, the cost of attending Michigan is insanely high. The scope for financial aid is restricted to a very small percentage of students coming from other states."
