With over 70,000 students and a 5200+ acre campus, Texas A&M is one of the largest universities in the country and one of six Senior Military Colleges in the U.S. Often called TAMU, “Aggieland,” or simply A&M, the public research university is known for its agricultural and engineering programs, military-friendly environment, D1 sports, and large and loyal alumni network.”
A typical TAMU student is religious, conservative, and proud to be an Aggie. However it’s impossible to make generalizations about all students at such a huge school. As one CC Community member notes, “I get the culture is overall “conservative” relative to university-dom as a whole. That said, due to the massive size of the student body, just about anyone can find their tribe of like-minded students and feel at home.”
TAMU prides itself in supporting military students and veterans. The popular Corps of Cadets program thoroughly prepares students for military careers.
On the Friday night before each home football game, around 25,000 TAMU students gather at Kyle Field for the Midnight Yell, for the largest pep rally in the country. Aggies get pumped up for the big game by listening to the famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, firing cannons, cheering and–yes–yelling. The rally ends after the stadium lights go out for a few seconds and provide a chance for a "midnight kiss," which is said to bring good luck.
Pros:
Strong Academics: Texas A&M is a top research universities and many of its programs are ranked among the best in the country.
School Spirit: The Aggie Network, the university’s alumni association, provides a strong support system for current and former students.
Size and Resources: The large size comes with a wide range of opportunities for students, including over 1000 clubs and organizations, and access to state-of-the-art facilities.
Strong Athletics: Texas A&M has a strong D1 athletic program. Aggies are passionate about their sports teams and full of school spirit.
Cons:
Conservative Culture: Students with more liberal political views may feel out of place in Texas A&M conservative culture.
Large Class Sizes: Large lecture-style classes may not appeal to students who want discussion and individualized attention.
Limited Diversity: The University has made efforts to improve diversity, but the student body is still predominantly white, male and from Texas. About 1 in 4 students are Hispanic and 1 in 10 are Asian, but a very low percentage of students describe themselves as Black, Native American, or Pacific Islander.
Location: Students seeking a more urban environment may find the small-town feel of College Station limiting.
