About MIT

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, commonly known as MIT, is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT is a world-renowned learning institution for science, engineering, and technology. MIT is known for its rigorous academics, distinguished faculty, and cutting-edge research.  

In addition to the academics, MIT also has a wide variety of extracurricular activities that complement the university’s STEM focus. Some of these activities include robotics club, hackathons, engineering teams, maker spaces with tools and resources to aid in personal projects and coursework, and the annual MIT $100k Entrepreneurship Competition

MIT is known for being academically challenging with a very driven and ambitious student culture. Students are often fully engaged with their studies and projects. Student life at MIT includes over 500 student organizations, engaging recreational opportunities, art events and groups, and greek life.

Although known primarily for its academics, MIT also has an active sports community. The university competes at the NCAA division III level as a member of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference. The most popular sports at MIT include cross country and track & field, soccer, swimming and diving, rowing, and basketball. 

Did You Know?

MIT has a pirate course which allows students to earn a certificate by completing a series of courses which include archery, fencing, pistol, and sailing. Completing the Pirate Certificate is also one way that students can complete MIT’s physical education requirement.
