Alabama State University has a significant role in the history of American civil rights. It served as a key meeting place and organizational center for many of the activists involved in the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-56, a seminal event in the civil rights movement. The boycott, sparked by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger, was a powerful demonstration of African American resistance to segregation, and it propelled Martin Luther King Jr. to national prominence.
