Vandy students come from many different backgrounds and pride themselves on balancing rigorous academics with an active social scene. Greek life is popular at Vandy, especially among women. Vanderbilt has competitive D1 teams in a number of sports, including baseball, football, basketball, and championship winning bowling team. The Commodores compete as part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Vanderbilt University's campus is officially recognized as a national arboretum. There are over 6000 trees and shrubs spread across Vandy’s 330-acre campus, making walking from class-to-class feel like a walk in the park. The white oak is the official symbol of Vanderbilt, but the most common tree on campus is the Southern magnolia, which bursts into bloom each Spring, adorning campus with its beautiful white flowers.
